A or B End of the Road

We have driven to the end of the road. We have driven as far West as you can drive without taking a ferry. A few weeks ago we were north of the arctic circle and within 300 miles of the end of road going north.

Any farther is for idiots and TV.

We have driven as far south as you can drive. Key West and only 50 miles from Cuba.

Maybe next summer we will go to Maine and drive the bus as far east as you can in the USA.

A or B Food

We went to lunch at The Great Salmon Bake. That is not an optical illussion. Nothing was level. The building was slopping to the left on one side and to the right on the other. Made going up and down the stairs a challenge. Since it is mostly a bar, many of the patrons simply assumed they needed more to drink. Not my case.

But the burger was good. Have to try the salmon another time.

A or B Sled Dogs

Denali NP keep a kennel of sled dogs for use in patroling the park in the winter. During the summer they train the dogs pulling a wheeled sled. They also give demonstrations to the public.

Each dog has his or her own log dog house.  They seem to spend a lot of time resting on the top. Some times very alert to the activity around them.

Other times they seem pretty bored.
They have lots of dog company. There were 32 dogs in the kennel.
Sharon had to find the oldest dog and give him some attention. I think Lucky appreciated the back rub.

A or B Top of the World Highway

I couldn't take very many pics. My hands were glued to the steering wheel, and I couldn't take my eyes off the road.

Pot holes, ruts, mud, soft sholders,  no guard rails, shear drop offs, the list goes on....

But we did make it from Dawson, Yukon to Tok, Alaska via the Top of the World Highway.

We wanted to avoid the long wait at the ferry. So we got an early start. We were first in line at 5:45am. Didn't realize the crew changed at 6:00am and the refueled the ferry. We waited for a half hour to board so we could cross the Yukon river.
There is only one bridge across the Yukon. We will cross that bridge later when we drive to the Arctic Circle.  In Dawson you take a small free ferry. Big enough to carry two large motorhomes at a time.
In several places the road is too narrow for vehicles to pass. This truck waited for us to come round the switch back and up to him were it was wide enough to get by. Lucky we only met three vehicles.
The weather was threatening all day. But we got lucky and the rain held off till we were most of the way to Tok.
One of problems with being first on the ferry, is you get to the US Border before they open. We only had to wait about 30 minutes.
We met a guy who drove his pickup over the Top of the World Highway. He left late and got to the border after they closed for the night. He decided not to spend the night. Instead he drove back to Dawson City to spend the night.
